The programme prepares students for professional jobs in the English media with a backbone of four writing courses as well as broadcast and online production classes. Organizational Communication Major The Organizational Communication Major prepares students for a professional career as communication specialists in profit and non-profit organizations. Students are expected to become well-rounded leaders in various fields of communication. The programme emphasizes knowledge integration and creation, the development of expressive and analytical skills, as well as critical thinking, team building, decision-making and problem-solving abilities. The curriculum is a strong blend of theories and practical applications at various levels of communication, such as interpersonal, small group, and organizational.
Public Relations and Advertising The Public Relations and Advertising Major provides opportunities for students to practice the art of effective integrated communication in both public relations and advertising contexts in different kinds of organizations, in an effort to inform consumers and other stakeholders about practices, services or products, to persuade, to reach mutual understanding, to achieve two-way dialogue, and to enhance brand engagement. Students are expected to become effective and ethical communication managers. In the later stages of the programme, students will specialize in either Public Relations or Advertising.
For 2016 intake onwards, students can opt for the following three Majors:
Animation and Media Arts Concentration (Starting from academic year 2017-18, the Animation and Media Arts Concentration will adopt the programme-based admission and there will be no Majors/Concentrations allocation for the Animation and Media Arts students.) Animation and Media Arts Concentration provides theoretical training in visual media and creativity, with an emphasis on leveraging digital media for vaious forms of creative expression, such as digital animation, interactive gaming, visual design and art installations. Film and Television Concentration Film and Television Concentration provides broad training in film, video and television, with attention to relevant areas of theory, history, and practice.
Chinese Journalism Concentration (Including Broadcast Journalism) Chinese Journalism students begin their major studies in year two. The programme prepares students for professional jobs in the Chinese media with a backbone of four writing courses as well as broadcast and online production classes. Four laboratory courses in which students produce their own Chinese –language news publication as reporters and editors provide students the opportunity to put newsgathering, reporting and editing skills into practice. Students will also undertake four conceptual courses, including Media Law and Ethics and Communication Theory, which stress the theoretical aspects of journalism and its practice. In the last semester, students complete an Honours Project as either a professional project or a research thesis. CJ students who wish to specialize in traditional broadcast journalism will take one advanced broadcasting course in place of the fourth writing course, and one course in News Anchoring in place of the Journalism Elective. Financial Journalism Concentration Financial Journalism students begin their major studies in year two. The programme prepares students for professional jobs in business and financial news media in both Chinese and English with a backbone of four writing courses as well as broadcast and online production classes. Four laboratory courses in which students produce their own financial and business-news publication as reporters and editors provide students the opportunity to put newsgathering, reporting and editing skills into practice. Students will also undertake conceptual courses that provide the students with the necessary prerequisites for courses offered by the School of Business. These business courses are designed for students of business, not as general electives, and they require some background in economics and accountancy. In the last semester, students complete an Honours Project as either a professional project or a research thesis. International Journalism Concentration International Journalism students begin their major studies in year two. Advertising and Branding Concentration Advertising and Branding Concentration prepares students to present ideas in an innovative and socially responsible way for effective brand communication and promotions. Organizational Communication Concentration Organizational Communication Concentration offers training in knowledge integration and creation, the development of expressive and analytical skills, critical thinking, team building, as well as decision-making and problem-solving ability. Public Relations Concentration Students of Public Relations Concentration will acquire both the critical understanding and relevant skills to develop successful careers in corporate communication, public affairs, social responsibility, media relations, crisis communication and digital PR across different sectors (i.e. business, government and non-profit).
