three equal vertical bands of blue (hoist side), white, and red; known as the "Le drapeau tricolore" (French Tricolor), the origin of the flag dates back from 1790 and the French Revolution; the design and/or colors inspired a number of other flags, including those of Belgium, Chad, Ireland, Cote d'Ivoire, Luxembourg, and Netherlands; the official flag for all French dependent areas.

The Coat of Arms of the French Republic is the symbol of the French Republic since 1953. Technically speaking, it is an emblem rather than a coat of arms, since it doesn't respect heraldical rules -- heraldry being seen as an aristocratic art, and therefore associated with the Ancien Régime. The olive tree symbolises peace; the oak symbolises perennity. "RF" mean République Française (French Republic). The fasces is a symbol associated with justice (from ancient Rome lictor's axes, in this case not fascism)
